Jim D'Arcy
Jim D’Arcy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI). He brings extensive experience in education, public service, strategic advisory work and cross-border affairs to his role with CBOI.
Jim is a former school principal, Senator and Special Adviser to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Northern Ireland, border issues and Brexit. A native of Dundalk, Co. Louth, he began his career in education and served as Principal of Bellurgan National School, reflecting his longstanding commitment to education and the development of young people.
Jim served as a member of both Louth County Council and Dundalk Town Council, representing Dundalk South, and holds the distinction of having served as Cathaoirleach of both councils. In 2011, he was appointed to Seanad Éireann, where he served until 2016 and was Fine Gael spokesperson on Education and Skills.
In 2017, Jim was appointed Special Adviser to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Northern Ireland, border issues and Brexit. In this role, he worked extensively on cross-border relations and represented the Irish Government in international engagements, including at the Council of Europe. He also maintained a direct liaison with the Shared Island Unit.
Jim continues to play an active role in public and community life and brings considerable experience of leadership, governance and strategic development to CBOI.
As Chairman of the CBOI Board, Jim is a strong advocate for the organisation’s vision of bringing young people from across the island of Ireland together through music, education and shared cultural experiences. He is particularly committed to CBOI’s role in promoting friendship, understanding and cooperation across communities and borders, and to the opportunities the organisation provides for young people to develop confidence, skills and a sense of belonging through music.
