How it works

Count Us In is a free instrumental music programme for children and young people who want to learn an orchestral instrument. We provide expert group tuition, regular ensemble rehearsals, music theory, performance opportunities and instrument loans.

As students progress, they join our Count Us In orchestras, work towards ABRSM music exams, and when ready, become members of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland.

Our aim is simple: to make high-quality music education accessible to every child, regardless of their background or financial circumstances, while building confidence, friendships and a lifelong love of music.

Year 1

Free instrument & weekly group lessons

Children receive an instrument on loan and free weekly group lessons. All children participate in instrumental and theory group lessons. Students are taught by top professional, experienced musicians.

Year 2

Join the Count Us In Orchestra

In addition to instrument and theory tuition, children join the Count Us In Orchestra. Performance and ensemble playing become a regular part of the experience.

Beyond Year 2

Progression to the CBOI

CUI is a feeder programme for the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. Students become members of the CBOI when they reach the appropriate standard.

What to consider before applying

This programme is for families who are serious about learning music and who wish for their son or daughter to become a member of the CBOI in the future. We don't want anybody joining to 'try it' for a few weeks and then give up, thus depriving a serious student of the opportunity.

  • Parents are required to attend lessons with their son or daughter.

  • 100% commitment and attendance is required.

  • Please ensure you can commit to the full schedule of Sunday lessons in Dundalk.

  • Daily practice at home is essential.

  • All students must take the ABRSM music exam at the end of each year.

  • All students take part in theory classes in addition to instrumental classes.

  • All students join the CUI Junior Orchestra in year 2.

Which instrument should I choose?

We offer lessons in String, Woodwind and Brass instruments. Choice of instrument depends on age and physicality.

  • Violin — start at 7 - 8 years, as this is a difficult instrument to master.

  • Trombone & Double Bass — from age 10 - 13.

  • Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet  - from age 9.
