No — Count Us In is designed for complete beginners. What matters is commitment and willingness to practice.If you are 12year +, and already learning piano, we'd expecially love to hear from you as Trombone and Double bass may be indeal instruments for you

Is the programme really free?

Yes - Count Us In is completely free for participants. This includes instrument tuition, instrument loan, music theory classes and orchestra membership.At the end of each year, all Count Us In students take ABRSM graded music exams. Students are responsible for the exam fee and any accompanist fee required for their exam.The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams are internationally recognised qualifications, offering students a structured pathway to develop their musical skills and celebrate their progress.

Where do lessons take place?

All lessons take place at Coláiste Chu Chulainn in Dundalk on Sundays mostly during the school term. A detailed schedule is sent to all participating families at the start of each new year. Families travel from across the island to attend.

What commitment is required?

Count Us In is a serious music education programme and requires commitment from both students and parents.Students are expected to:Attend all lessons and rehearsals (100% attendance is essential)Practise their instrument daily at homeTake part in theory classes which are porvided as part of the programmeTake part fully in orchestra activities (from year 2)Sit ABRSM graded music exams each yearParents are required to attend lessons with their child, particularly for younger students.

Will my child need to practice at home?

Yes. Regular practice at home is an essential part of learning an instrument and making progress.Learning music is a journey, and consistent practice helps students build confidence, develop strong technique and become independent musicians.Parents play a vital role in supporting their child’s musical development. For younger students especially, parents are encouraged to be actively involved in practice sessions, helping to create positive routines and offering encouragement along the way.The children who progress most successfully — and who get the greatest enjoyment from making music — are those whose families are engaged and supportive throughout the learning journey.

Are there music exams

Yes. All Count Us In students are expected to take ABRSM graded music exams each year.The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams are internationally recognised qualifications and provide students with clear goals as they progress.Students are responsible for the exam fee and any accompanist fee required.All CUI students also do reqular theory exams. OUr grade 3 and grade 5 theory students take the official ABRSM theory exams.

Why start violin at a younger age than other instrument?

Violin is one of the most challenging but rewarding instrument. It requires the development of specific physical skills, technique and musical coordination that take many years to build.Our experience over many years has shown us that starting violin at a young age gives students the only way to develop to a high standard. While children can successfully begin other instruments at an older age and progress to professional standards — even pursuing careers in music — this is much like likely on violin.For this reason, we strongly encourage children to begin violin as early as possible. Starting young allows students the time they need to develop strong foundations, confidence and the technical skills required to become accomplished violinists.

Why are Trombone and Double Bass recommended for older students?

Our years of experience have shown us that students can begin these instruments at an older age and still progress to a very high standard, including professional levels. Unlike some instruments, it is possible to develop the technique and musicianship required for a future career in music even when starting later.Trombone and double bass are larger instruments and are generally more suitable for students aged 12 and over, when they have the physical development needed to play them comfortably.Students who have a foundation in piano often have an advantage when beginning trombone or double bass, as both instruments are written in the bass clef. An understanding of pitch, rhythm, notation and music theory provides a strong foundation for learning these instruments successfully.

What happens after Count Us In

Count Us In is a pathway towards the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI), providing students with the opportunity to develop the skills, discipline and musicianship required to become members of the orchestra.Many former Count Us In students have progressed into the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, with some continuing their musical journey at university and beyond.However, membership of the CBOI is not automatic. Our standards are very high, and only students who demonstrate the required level of musical ability, commitment and dedication progress into the orchestra.Throughout the programme, we carefully monitor each student’s progress and provide guidance and feedback to families. In some cases, we may advise parents if their child is not progressing at the required pace or if the CBOI pathway is not the right fit for them.Success in music requires consistent practice, commitment and a willingness to work hard. The students who make the greatest progress are those who attend regularly, practise consistently and are fully engaged in their musical development.

How many students are in each class?

Count Us In classes are designed to provide a supportive group learning environment while ensuring that each student receives quality tuition and guidance.Instrumental classes generally have approximately 10–15 students, although some classes may be smaller, with 5–6 students, depending on the instrument and the number of students at each level.Learning in groups allows children to develop confidence, learn from each other and experience the teamwork and enjoyment that comes from making music together.Music theory classes are larger, with approximately 30 students, reflecting the importance of learning together and developing a strong shared understanding of musical concepts.We have three orchestras: CUI Juniors 50 - 70 members; CUI Intermediates - 40-50 members. CBOI - 100 members.

Do children need to audition for Cont Us In?

Ordinarily, there is no audition for entry to Count Us In.However, applicants must demonstrate that they are willing and able to commit to the full programme schedule. Students may be assessed during the programme to ensure they are progressing and engaging fully.Count Us In is a pathway to the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, and students must continue to meet the required standards to progress.

How much commitment is required?

Commitment is essential.Students are expected to:Attend all instrument an theory lessons from year 1, and orchestra rehearsal in addition, from year 2.Practise regularly at home with a parent / carerArrive prepared with their music and equipmentParticipate positively in group learningFamilies receive the full schedule of lessons and events in advance. If a family cannot commit to the full programme, Count Us In may not be the right programme for them.

What happens if my child misses a lesson?

Regular attendance is essential for both individual progress and the success of the group.Students who miss 3 or more lessons may lose their place on the programme. Families should inform the CBOI team and their teacher as soon as possible if they are unable to attend.

Are instruments provided?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Count Us In students receive an instrument on loan free of charge.Instruments remain the property of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland and students and families are responsible for taking proper care of them.Families are expected to:Store and transport the instrument safelyFollow care instructions provided by tutorsReport any damage immediatelyAny damage caused will result in repair or replacement costs for parents.

Question 18

Can students take lessons outside CUI?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Some students take additional instrumental lessons outside the programme as they progress.Students who receive external tuition can still participate fully in Count Us In.As students advance beyond Grade 5 level, tutors may recommend additional individual lessons to support further musical development.Tutors may also recommend that group lessons are not the right environment for your child and advise that they individualy lessons instead.
